My name is Nithila Vijayan. Today, we’re about to embark on a journey into a realm of scientific marvels. Have you ever wondered if we could create cells that are not just living, but also artificial? Let’s explore the fascinating world of artificial cells, synthetic structures that mimic the functions of living cells.

On April 23, 2024, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill unveiled a genuinely groundbreaking discovery. The creation of artificial cells, a feat with the potential to completely transform medicine, was announced.

Isn’t it mind-blowing? Just think about the possibilities in the medical field because of this. No more waiting for a tissue donor; instead, we could potentially use artificial cells to replace damaged or diseased tissues. It’s like science fiction becoming a reality!

How were they able to identify such a discovery?

Dr. Ronit Freeman and her fellow researchers manipulated DNA and protein, the essential building blocks of life, to create cells that can function like living cells in an organism. The cytoskeleton, a key component of natural cells, was crucial in this process. It holds all of the organelles inside and provides structural support, and aids in cell movement.

The cytoskeleton, built from protein, is crucial for maintaining cell structure and holding all the organelles. In this case, the cytoskeleton is made from unnatural proteins, which are manipulated to change shape and structure depending on where they are used in the organism. The researchers used programmable peptide-DNA technology to achieve this. Because of this program, synthetic cells are more adaptable to external stressors than normal cells and are more flexible in extreme environments.

For example, the researchers ran a test in the Freeman Lab by placing the synthetic cells in an environment that was 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Surprisingly, the artificial cells could maintain homeostasis in such a hot environment. This can open the door for humans and other organisms living in more extreme environments on Earth, allowing more habitable space. Enjoyed this article?
